1995 Video: Obama Praises Communist Mentor Frank Marshall Davis “Schools me” on getting used to white privilege

Video of Barack Obama in 1995 has surfaced online from the vault of Cambridge Public Library where a discussion of his book Dreams from My Father was hosted. Speaking to the crowd, Obama reveals that “Frank,” whom he mentions “schooled” him on how to “get used to” white racism, is really Frank Marshall Davis.

Davis was known as a card-carrying member of the Communist Party USA; according to a Breitbart report, he was also on the federal government’s Security Index during the Cold War era for his extreme politics. The report explains that because Davis was on that list, “he could have been immediately arrested” if war broke out between the Soviet Union and America.

“Frank” is mentioned throughout Obama’s book. Curiously, in the abridged audio version of Dreams from My Father released in 2005, the year Obama began his Senate career, all mentions of his mentor were scrubbed.

But now this video now exists online. In it, Obama talks about sitting with Davis in his home drinking whiskey listening to him talk about how “black people have a reason to hate… so you might as well get used to it.”

Another quote of Davis Obama included in the book was, “They’ll train you so good, you’ll start believing what they tell you about equal opportunity and the American way and all that sh*t.”

The 1995 video shows a young Obama expressing his own views and how they were based on what Davis taught him:

White Americans… partake in a hybrid culture. The truth of the matter is, is that American culture at this point — what is truly American — is black culture to a large degree. Flip on the television set, look at “Pulp Fiction” — you can choose whatever examples you want. It’s had a profound influence on this entire nation and it has to be affirmed.

Obama also blamed Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush for appointing Supreme Court judges who were unsympathetic to civil rights issues. “Conservatives have been very effective in using the moniker ‘politically correct’ to sort of beat back the progress we’ve made in terms of decency and civility,” Obama said. “At least theoretically, most conservatives still say that they believe in anti-discrimination laws; they just don’t believe in Affirmative Action.”
